How to Explore the Swiss Alps in 3 Full Days
Switzerland is a dream destination for anyone who loves nature, adventure, and breathtaking mountain scenery.
At the heart of this alpine paradise lie Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen—two quintessential Swiss towns nestled between towering peaks, deep valleys, and cascading waterfalls.
Three days is enough time for an unforgettable adventure that showcases the best these regions have to offer.
Day 1: Arrival in Interlaken and Exploring the Town
This picturesque town is perfectly situated between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, making it an ideal base for exploring the Swiss Alps.
However, if you wish to experience the charm of local Swiss villages while being surrounded by mountains, I recommend basing yourself in Lauterbrunnen. This may involve a bit more travelling, but you’ll feel the difference when you wake up to towering mountain views.
To achieve this, arrive in Interlaken around midday, store your luggage at the station, and explore the area before heading to Lauterbrunnen. Once you've settled into your accommodation, you’ll be ready to start your adventure.
Lake Thun or Lake Brienz
You have two fantastic options in Interlaken for your afternoon exploration:
Option 1: Lake Thun
Head to Lake Thun for a peaceful boat ride.
Departing from Interlaken West, you can catch a cruise and enjoy stunning views of the Alps reflecting off the crystal-clear waters.
Stop in nearby towns like Spiez, where you can explore a beautiful castle and its vineyards.
Option 2: Lake Brienz
If you arrive just before midday, I recommend Lake Brienz for its dramatic scenery.
Known for its striking turquoise waters, the lake offers breathtaking vistas of towering cliffs and charming villages.
Opt for a scenic boat cruise to Brienz, then venture to the summit of Brienzer Rothorn on a cogwheel train. The Brienz Rothorn Bahn is a historic cogwheel railway that ascends from Brienz to the summit of Brienzer Rothorn.
At the top, you’ll find hiking trails and stunning panoramas of Lake Brienz and the surrounding Alps. Reservations are necessary, especially during the summer.
Stroll and Dinner in Interlaken
As evening approaches, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Interlaken’s charming streets. The Höheweg promenade offers spectacular sunset views over the iconic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks.
For dinner, I recommend the Asia Restaurant, conveniently located near the station. They offer a variety of delicious Asian dishes at great prices—perfect after a day of excursions! If you're staying in Lauterbrunnen, head there after dinner to enjoy a magical evening of mountain scenery.
Day 2: Lauterbrunnen Valley – Waterfalls and Adventure
Disclaimer: This is going to be a leg day!
Be prepared for lots of walking, hiking, and exploring, so make sure you’ve got your comfortable shoes on—your legs will thank you later!Morning: Lauterbrunnen Valley and Staubbach Falls.
If staying in Interlaken, start your day with a short 20-minute train ride from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, renowned for its jaw-dropping valley setting and 72 waterfalls.
Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by Staubbach Falls, one of the tallest free-falling waterfalls in Europe, plunging nearly 300 metres from a steep cliff. Follow the hiking trail behind Staubbach Falls for a unique view of the waterfall and the valley.
Mid-Morning: Trümmelbach Falls
A short bus ride or walk from the village centre brings you to Trümmelbach Falls, a series of underground glacial waterfalls thundering through the mountain's interior. This is a must-see for anyone interested in witnessing the raw power of alpine nature.
Afternoon: Cable Car to Mürren or Schilthorn
After exploring the valley, take the cable car up to Mürren, a charming car-free mountain village perched high above Lauterbrunnen. Mürren offers breathtaking views of the iconic Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks.
For a more adrenaline-filled experience, continue up to Schilthorn—famous for being a filming location for the James Bond movie On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Here, you can dine at the 360-degree rotating restaurant, Piz Gloria, while soaking in views that stretch as far as Germany’s Black Forest on a clear day.
The Schilthorn serves as a fantastic alternative to Jungfraujoch due to its stunning 360-degree panoramas of iconic peaks like the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
Day 3: Kleine Scheidegg and Grindelwald First
Early Morning: Train to Kleine Scheidegg
Begin your day early by taking the train from Lauterbrunnen to Kleine Scheidegg.
This scenic journey will take you through picturesque landscapes, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains, including the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau.
Mid-Morning: Explore Kleine Scheidegg
Upon arrival at Kleine Scheidegg, take some time to soak in the breathtaking alpine scenery. This mountain pass is a popular starting point for various hiking trails and offers panoramic views of the iconic peaks.
If you're feeling adventurous, consider a hike along the scenic trails that lead to beautiful viewpoints.
Afternoon: Scenic Cable Car to Grindelwald First
After exploring Kleine Scheidegg, board the train back to Grindelwald. From there, take the cable car up to Grindelwald First, a stunning mountain that offers breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks.
At Grindelwald First, you can enjoy a leisurely walk along the panoramic trail, which provides spectacular vistas of the surrounding landscape.
Evening: Return to Grindelwald
After a day filled with adventure, take the cable car back down to Grindelwald and enjoy some time exploring this charming village.
Browse local shops or relax at a café with a view of the mountains. In the evening, savour a traditional Swiss dinner at one of the local restaurants before heading back to Lauterbrunnen for a restful night.
