From Grindewald Terminal, take bus 121 or 123 to First. Mid-Morning: First Cable Car and Cliff Walk Upon arrival, head straight for the Grindelwald-First cable car . This ride takes you up to the First Mountain, offering jaw-dropping views of the Eiger North Face and surrounding valleys. At the summit, take on the First Cliff Walk, an adrenaline-pumping skywalk that clings to the mountain’s edge, offering heart-stopping views of the valley below and the peaks ahead. Late Morning: Hike to Bachalpsee Take the scenic hike from First to Bachalpsee Lake (approximately 1 hour each way). This gentle trail leads you to one of the most stunning alpine lakes in the region, known for its crystal-clear waters and mirror-like reflections of the surrounding peaks. Day 5: Outdoor Adventure Morning: Head to Interlaken (and check out if your are staying elsewhere) On this day, we checked out around 10 AM after a lovely stroll at Staubbach Falls and headed back to Interlaken. We stored our suitcase at Interlaken station for a few hours, where convenient luggage storage is available for travellers, accommodating even large suitcases. Mid-Day: Harder Kulm Take the funicular up to Harder Kulm, Interlaken’s local mountain. Harder Kulm offers a panoramic viewpoint with stunning views over Interlaken, its two lakes, and the snowy peaks in the distance. Afternoon: Souvenir Shopping and Departure Spend your final afternoon shopping for souvenirs in Interlaken. Mount Rigi, often called the “Queen of the Mountains,” is conveniently located near Lucerne.  Its breathtaking vistas of the Swiss Alps and sparkling lakes make it a prime destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers alike. What to Expect at the Top of Mount Rigi Once you reach Rigi Kulm, the summit, prepare to be captivated by panoramic views of Lake Lucerne and the surrounding mountains.  On a clear day, the sight of Mount Pilatus in the distance is simply spectacular. What to Pack for Mount Rigi Weather-Appropriate Clothing The mountain weather can change rapidly, so layers are advisable. A waterproof jacket is a good idea. Comfortable Footwear Sturdy walking shoes are essential; sandals or heels are not recommended. Snacks or a Picnic Lunch Enjoy a meal surrounded by nature. Drop by Coop at Lucerne station for some amazing picnic selections Sunscreen Protect your skin, especially on sunny days. Weather Check   Always check the forecast before leaving. Best Pass for Mount Rigi The Saver Day Pass  is the most economical option, covering your return journey and all transport including boat, mountain train and cable car to and from Rigi. Saver Day Pass must be purchased in advance, it is not available on the day. I bought mine for 35 CHF, you can get them from 29 CHF or less if you have the Half Day Card. Transport to and from Mount Rigi The journey to Mount Rigi is part of the adventure! Here’s ta quick overview of transport sequence Boat : A scenic ride across Lake Lucerne to Vitznau Mountain Train : A charming ascent to Rigi Kulm Hike :   A scenic hike down to Rigi Kaltbad Cable Car : A thrilling descent to Weggis that offers a unique perspective of Lake Lucerne and Alps, then boat back to Lucerne Now to Rigi! The timings are from when I visit back in 2024. Keep in mind that timetables may vary by season. It will probably be the same for summer 2025 but double check just in case! Morning - Boat to Vitznau 09:12 Board the Boat from Lucerne 🚢 The 09:12 boat is first boat to depart from Lucerne. I suggest taking this boat so you can have the rest of the day exploring Rigi. A full timetable of the boat can be found here On a sunny day, grab a spot on the upper deck for lovely views and a refreshing breeze. The journey includes five stops before reaching Vitznau, where you take the mountain train.  Top Tip - Drop by Coop or Migros grocery at Lucerne station before heading to the docking station. They offer great selection of sandwiches, sushi, salads, and drinks you can take for a picnic! 10:09 Arrive at Vitznau Upon arrival, head straight to the mountain train just across the dock. Many passengers disembark here to take the train up so make sure you get on! 10:15 Mountain Train Departure 🚆 The train departs at 10:15. The Full departure time can be found here . Try to get the right window seat facing the back of the train (facing towards the lake, not the mountain). Get off at the last stop, Rigi Kulm, which is the top of the mountain. If you wish to hike, you can also get off at Rigi Staffel, the stop before Rigi Kulm and hike up. 10:47 Arrive at Rigi Kulm 🏔️ Welcome to the summit! Once you're at the top, you can spend as much time as you want exploring the area. Take photos, watch the cows and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding alps and lakes . There's a charming café where you can enjoy a relaxing coffee or indulge in a full meal. There are also many picturesque picnic spots in the area. Remember to respect the local environment and avoid littering! Midday   Hike Down For those adventure seekers, take the 1.5-hour hike down to Rigi Kaltbad. It took us about two hours, as we frequently stopped to take photos and immersed ourselves in the sounds of nature! The hike follows the route from Rigi Kulm – Staffel – Staffelhoehe – Kaenzeli – Rigi Kaltbad. The trail is well-marked with signs indicating directions and distances, so you won’t get lost. This gentle downhill walk, with a 300-meter elevation drop, offers breath-taking views and is suitable for most fitness levels. Along this scenic high-altitude walk, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Swiss plateau, stretching out to the Black Forest, the Vosges mountains, and the Alps. You'll also enjoy stunning bird's-eye views over Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug, making it an ideal route for those looking to enjoy maximum scenery with minimal effort! If you're up for more, check the Rigi website for top 5 hiking trails in Rigi for longer and more moderate hikes. For those who prefer not to hike, you can simply take the mountain train back down to Rigi Kaltbad—just three stops away from the top. Exploring Rigi Kaltbad Rigi Katbad is small area with some some souvenir shops, restaurant and cafe. There also a Mineral Bath & Spa if interested, just make sure to pre-book on their website ! We enjoyed a refreshing ice cream after the hike while we waited for the cable car. Afternoon 14:40 Cable Car Ride to Weggis Experience the standing cable car ride, which lasts about 10 minutes. There was short queue, we waited about 15 minutes. 14:50 Arrive at Weggis Stroll around this charming village offering lovely spots to relax by Lake Lucerne.  You can also swim in the lake to cool down. Its perfect adventure on a hot day! 15:30 Boat Departure from Weggis Stay longer if desired, or catch the 15:30 boat back to Lucerne. We were lucky enough to ride the steam boat, where you can see the engine and appreciate the boat's vintage, classic design. 15:47 Return to Lucerne Arrive back in Lucerne after a day full of adventure. You can continue exploring the old town or take a break before heading out for dinner. We headed to the old town just before sunset. Most of the shops were already closed however it was perfect time to walk around as there weren't many tourists at this time. Perfect time to take photos and admire the old part of Lucerne. Edinburgh is my favourite city in the world. Although it can be cold and often dreary, it has a unique character and rugged charm that captivates me every time I visit. With friendly locals, stunning architecture, and a castle overlooking the city, it’s hard not to fall in love. We spent four delightful days in Scotland in late November, a time when Edinburgh truly comes alive with its Christmas market. In this blog, I’ll share our two days in Edinburgh and two days in the breathtaking Highlands. Day 1: Arrival in Edinburgh We began our journey by taking the train from London Kings Cross, arriving in Edinburgh in just under five hours. The train ride was smooth and relaxing, far better than the hassle of flying. Once we arrived, we checked into the Apex Grassmarket Hotel  in the Old Town, conveniently located near the Royal Mile. After settling in, we headed straight to the Christmas market. The atmosphere was electric, filled with twinkling lights and festive stalls brimming with crafts and delicious food. The highlight of our evening was dinner at Pakora Bar , where we indulged in a lovely curry before winding down with a pint at The Last Drop  pub, a charming spot with a slightly melancholic history. Day 2: Exploring Edinburgh Our second day started with a hearty breakfast before we set off to explore the city. We made our way to Edinburgh Castle , which dominates the skyline and offers stunning views of the city below. Later, we visited St. Giles’ Cathedral , a historic landmark in the heart of Edinburgh. By evening, we returned to the Christmas market, where we savoured local delicacies, including haggis, and soaked up the festive atmosphere that surrounded the stalls. There’s something truly magical about the city during this time of year, and it was the perfect way to end our time in Edinburgh before heading into the Highlands. Day 3: The Scottish Highlands On our third day, we hired a car and set off for the Highlands, leaving Edinburgh around 10 AM. We drove along the Old Military Road , which offered breathtaking views at every turn. Remarkably, we experienced four seasons in just five minutes as we journeyed through the ever-changing Scottish landscape. The weather was kind to us, with only a few light drizzles throughout the day. We stopped for lunch and coffee at a quaint little spot in Braemar  before continuing our drive past Balmoral Castle . Our next destination was the Corgarff viewpoint , followed by the Cairngorm Mountain Upper Car Park . However, as darkness began to creep in, we decided to make our way to Fort Augustus , which was another two-hour drive away. We arrived in Fort Augustus, a small, charming town on the banks of Loch Ness . We stayed at the Loch Ness Guest House , a lovely and cosy homestay with fantastic local hospitality. That evening, we ventured out for dinner at a local pub, enjoying the warm atmosphere and traditional fare. Day 4: More Highlands and the Journey Home The next morning was cold and crisp, just like you’d expect in the Highlands. We had a warm breakfast by a cosy fire in a small café and didn’t want to leave. But the charm of Fort Augustus  and its quiet canals drew us outside, and the cool air made the town feel even more magical. We explored Loch Ness , taking in its stunning views and the enchanting atmosphere surrounding the famous lake. Afterwards, we headed to the Commando Memorial  for stunning views of  Ben Nevis , then continued on to Fort William . The drive through Glencoe  was breathtaking, with dramatic landscapes and a noteworthy stop at the Meeting of Three Waters . We continued our journey to the Buachaille Etive Mór viewpoint , followed by the famous James Bond road viewpoint . As it grew darker, we made our way to our accommodation for the night, the Holiday Inn Express Strathclyde Park , just outside Glasgow. After a long day of driving, we enjoyed a hearty dinner at Toby's Carvery , satisfying our hunger after a busy day. The next day, we returned the hire car at 10 AM and boarded the train back to London. This trip was filled with unforgettable experiences, but it also involved a lot of driving. We are used to long drives, but navigating the narrow roads of the Highlands proved a bit challenging at times. We even had a close encounter with a deer that halted us in our tracks at night! Thankfully, it didn’t jump in front of the car. We highly recommend this scenic drive, particularly in the summer when the nights are longer and the weather is more predictable. During our visit, the sun set around 5 PM, making our return to our accommodation quite a race against the clock. Despite the challenges, this Christmas holiday was an incredible experience, blending the magic of Edinburgh with the stunning beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Like many travelers, I had long been excited to visit Hallstatt, the postcard-perfect Austrian village nestled between mountains and lake. It’s the kind of place you see in travel guides and Instagram posts—a dream destination promising a peaceful escape, stunning scenery, and a taste of Austria’s natural beauty. But as we discovered, sometimes reality doesn’t quite match up to expectations. After researching and falling in love with the picturesque photos of Hallstatt, we were buzzing with excitement. We visited in the summer and we decided to drive in early, staying in Bad Gastein, another beautiful area of Austria, and making the journey from there. By the time we arrived at the outskirts of the lake around 10 a.m., the scenery was as lovely as expected. Locals were out on paddleboards, and we found a scenic spot to enjoy breakfast at Einkehr Stub’n. Things were off to a great start! After our meal, we drove toward the main Hallstatt area, eager to take in the famous views. But what we hadn’t anticipated was the parking situation. Despite our early arrival, every spot was already taken. We spent what felt like forever circling around, dodging tour buses and other hopeful visitors, all on the hunt for the elusive parking space. Just when we were about to give up and head home in disappointment, we lucked out. A parking space opened up, and we parked with a sigh of relief. Once parked, we made our way to the famous viewpoint—the one that graces countless postcards and travel blogs. And yes, the view was just as breathtaking as we’d imagined. The alpine lake, the charming historic buildings, and the mountains towering above created a stunning scene. But, as is often the case with popular tourist spots, we didn't expect the amount of tour buses that were here. Hundreds of tourists, many from large coach tours, crowded the narrow streets. Everywhere we turned, people were snapping photos, jostling for the best angles, and queuing up for the iconic Hallstatt selfie. And while I don’t want to sound overly negative—Hallstatt truly is a beautiful place—the sheer number of people made it hard to fully appreciate the charm. Even the locals seemed a bit overwhelmed by the constant flood of visitors. There’s no denying that Hallstatt is lovely. The scenery lives up to its reputation. But the overwhelming number of tourists gave it more of a theme park feel than the peaceful lakeside village we had imagined. If I were to visit Hallstatt again, I’d definitely plan differently. Visiting in autumn, perhaps staying overnight instead of making it a quick day trip, would allow you to enjoy the village in the early morning or evening when the crowds have thinned. Hallstatt deserves to be experienced at a slower pace, giving you time to really soak in its beauty without the rush. Is Hallstatt Worth Visiting? Yes, but with some caution. I recommend avoiding August, as we did, and summer weekends, when the village tends to be overcrowded with tourists. Since Hallstatt is quite small, a full day trip can feel excessive—after wandering around and taking photos, there isn’t much else to do. Also, keep in mind that the Austrian Alps are home to many beautiful towns, many situated beside stunning glacial lakes. If you’re not set on getting that iconic Hallstatt photo, you can enjoy a similar experience in a less crowded, and likely more affordable, nearby village. Otherwise, if you plan to go and you're driving and don’t mind the beautiful scenery alongside the crowds, be prepared for a challenge when it comes to parking. When the lots are full, attendants only allow cars in as others leave, so you might find yourself circling around and hoping for a bit of luck. To avoid this hassle, consider visiting very early in the morning. Alternatively, you can take a coach from Salzburg, as most visitors do. This option can save you the parking stress and allow you to enjoy the views without the hassle.

There’s something magical about the city at this time of year—the way it lights up with warm colours and how every weekend seems to bring a new celebration. If you’re looking to soak up the best of what London has to offer this September and October, here are some of my favourite festivals and events that you won’t want to miss. 1. London Film Festival If you’re a movie lover like me, October is a time to get excited. The BFI London Film Festival takes over the city, turning it into a playground for film enthusiasts. Imagine catching a film that no one else has seen yet, or sitting in a theatre where the director is just a few seats away, ready to chat about their work. The festival is all about discovering new stories, meeting like-minded people, and enjoying the magic of cinema. I love the variety the festival offers—from big-name premieres at Leicester Square to indie gems at the BFI Southbank. It’s a chance to escape into different worlds, and maybe even spot a celebrity or two! 2. Diwali Celebrations One of the most joyful times in London has to be Diwali, the festival of lights. Trafalgar Square bursts into life with vibrant colours, music, and the most delicious smells of Indian street food. Whether you celebrate Diwali or are just curious to experience something new, this event is pure joy. I always make it a point to visit, especially to see the beautiful light displays as the sun goes down. The performances on stage—everything from traditional dance to modern Bollywood hits—are so full of energy that you can’t help but smile. And of course, grabbing some tasty samosas or a warm chai to enjoy while taking it all in is a must! 3. London Fashion Week If you’re into fashion, September in London is an absolute dream. London Fashion Week is one of the biggest events in the city’s calendar, drawing in designers, models, and fashionistas from all over the world. Whether you’re lucky enough to snag a ticket to a show or just love to soak in the atmosphere, there’s something thrilling about being in the city during this time. Some of the most prestige venues in London transform into runways, with pop-up events, fashion showcases, and the stylish crowd strutting their stuff. 4. Oktoberfest in London As October rolls in, London takes on a Bavarian twist with Oktoberfest celebrations popping up all over the city. If you’ve ever wanted to experience the fun of this German festival without leaving the UK, you’re in luck! Venues like the Bavarian Beerhouse, Alexandra Palace and Munich Cricket Club host events that bring the traditional beer halls of Munich to life right here in London. Imagine long tables filled with people clinking steins of beer, hearty German food like pretzels and sausages, and live oompah bands playing all night long. It’s a lively, joyful celebration that’s all about good company, great beer, and a lot of fun. Whether you’re a beer enthusiast or just looking for a good time, Oktoberfest is a must-do event in October. 5. Halloween Events As October rolls on, London embraces its spooky side, and there are plenty of ways to get into the Halloween spirit. Whether you’re a fan of all things creepy or prefer your scares with a side of fun, there’s something for everyone. One of my go-to spots is the London Dungeon . It’s the perfect mix of history and horror, with live actors who bring London’s darker past to life in a way that’s both terrifying and fascinating. But if you’re like me and enjoy a bit of Halloween fun with the family, Boo at the Zoo  at ZSL London Zoo is a great option. The kids love the themed activities, and I have to admit, I get pretty into the pumpkin carving too! And for a more relaxed, atmospheric experience, the after-dark Halloween trail at Kew Gardens  is just enchanting. Walking through the gardens with eerie lights and sounds around you is a perfect way to enjoy a spooky yet serene evening. 6. Bonfire Night As we edge closer to winter, one of the best ways to wrap up the autumn season is with Bonfire Night. I have so many fond memories of bundling up in scarves and gloves, heading to one of London’s parks to watch the sky explode with colour. Some of my favourite spots are Alexandra Palace  and Battersea Park , where you can enjoy a huge bonfire, grab some hot food, and watch the fireworks with a great view of the city skyline. There’s something so comforting about standing by a roaring fire, surrounded by friends and family, as the fireworks light up the sky. 7. Open House London If you’re curious about what’s behind London’s many closed doors, Open House London  is your chance to find out. This event, usually in September, lets you peek inside some of the city’s most interesting buildings, many of which are usually off-limits to the public. I always get excited to see what’s on offer each year. From modern architectural wonders to historic landmarks, there’s always something that catches my eye. And the best part? Many of the tours are led by the architects or historians who know these spaces inside and out, so you get all the fascinating details. Autumn in London is truly special—it’s a time to slow down, savour the changing seasons, and enjoy the incredible variety of events that the city has to offer. Whether you’re watching a film that moves you, celebrating the triumph of light at Diwali, getting inspired at London Fashion Week, or enjoying a good scare on Halloween, these moments make the season all the more memorable. So grab your coat, head out into the crisp autumn air, and enjoy all the wonderful things London has to offer this time of year.

The Scotch Whisky Experience is a great place to learn about whisky-making and sample different types. Explore Old Town and New Town Both Old Town and New Town are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wander through the medieval charm of the Old Town and the elegant Georgian streets of the New Town.
